Ripping DVD to Apple TV for playback on Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV

I have a sizable collection of DVD movies, gathering dust in their cases and gobbling up valuable shelf space and now I want to play these DVD movies on Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV via Apple TV. I have two Apple TV versions: 2 and 3. How could I convert the DVD movies to fit my Apple TVs since they won’t receive DVD movies directly?

Ripping DVD to Apple TV for playback on Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV

Apple TV is a digital media receiver created by Apple Inc., which is designed to acess digital content from the iOS devices, or any Mac OS X or Windows-based computer running to a high-definition widescreen television, but Apple TV supports very few file formats, which include H.264 and MPEG-4 MP4/M4V videos meaning DVD cannot work with your Apple TV 2/3 as above.

In this case, a DVD Ripper for Apple TV is needed here. Here Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac is suggested to rip DVD to Apple TV 2/3 compatible m4v format H.264 or MPEG-4 at super fast speed with the CUDA or AMD acceleration technology support. After converting, you can get the m4v files for syncing to Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV and enjoy. Besides, with this program, you can freely select wanted subtitles for your DVD movies.

Guide: Convert DVD to Apple TV m4v for Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV playback with AC3 5.1

Step 1: Import DVD movie to the DVD Ripper for Apple TV.

Launch the best Mac DVD Ripper for Apple TV(Windows version is here). Click the button like a disc or the folder to load DVD movie to it. If necessary, you can double click the each file to have a preview.

Tip: Freely select the subtitles for your DVD movies from the “Subtitles” option. Thus, you can watch DVD movie on the 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV with preferred subtitles.

Step 2: Select an output format for the Apple TV and set the output folder.

To view DVD via Apple TV, next you need to choose an output video format. This smart program provides the video presets for Apple TV, Apple TV 2 and the Apple TV 3. What does that mean? That means you can convert DVDs to videos with optimized settings for different Apple TVs and you don’t need to worry about the incompatibility anymore!
  • Click on the drop-down menu of “Format” and then move your pointer to Apple TV > Apple TV 3 Dolby Digital Pass-through (*.m4v) that is the best format for your ATV 3.
  • For Apple TV 2 users, please select the Apple TV 2 Dolby Digital Pass-through (*.m4v).
  • For Apple TV users, Apple TV H.264 1280×720(*.m4v) will be better to keep the videos in HD.

Step 3: Click “Settings” icon to make the best video/audio settings for Apple TV.

Click the “Settings” icon and you will go into a new interface named “Profile Settings”. You can adjust codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channel in the interface according to your needs and optimize the output file quality.

Step 4: Start converting your DVD movie to M4V for the Apple TV.

Click the “Convert” button; it will convert DVD movie to M4V for Apple TV 3 immediately. You can find the process in the “Conversion” interface.

After the DVD to ATV conversion, you can get the output H.264 M4V with AC3 5.1 sound.

Additional Tips:

1. How to make full use of your output 1080p H.264 M4V video with AC3 5.1 sound?

From the specifications of the Apple TV, the supported file format is H.264 video with stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats. Besides, the iTunes can not support AC3 5.1 files well either. (Best Video and Audio Formats for iTunes

Actually, Applet TV (including 2nd-gen and 3nd-gen) does not decode the surround audio itself, it will pass through the audio to AV receiver for decoding. If you do not have the AV receiver and connect Apple TV directly to your TV with HDMI, then there will be only video without sound while playing surround sound movie. But Apple TV itself just works ok with movie of stereo sound.

2. How to send Mac computer screen to TV via Airplay Mirroring with Apple TV

a. Turning AirPlay Mirroring on and off

If your Mac supports AirPlay Mirroring, an AirPlay Mirroring menu extra appears in the menu bar when an Apple TV is on the same network. Turn on/off mirroring by selecting an Apple TV from the AirPlay Mirroring menu:

Note: The AirPlay Mirroring menu extra icon is blue when AirPlay Mirroring is on.

b. Resolution matching modes

You can choose between two desktop resolution matching modes that let you select which display will have the best image. When AirPlay Mirroring is turned on, select a “Match Desktop Size” choice via the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.

c. Match Desktop Size To: Apple TV

AirPlay Mirroring changes the desktop resolution to best match your Apple TV, resulting in 16:9 aspect ratio that fills the TV screen. This setting often produces the sharpest image on the TV.

d. Match Desktop Size To: This Mac

AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of the desktop to fit on the Apple TV, leaving the resolution of your Mac’s display unchanged. Use this setting for the sharpest image on your Mac’s display.

Now start enjoy your DVD movies on Onkyo receiver and Panasonic TV via your Apple TV 2/3.

Set Up ATV 4 for streaming HD videos with Dobly Digital 5.1 sounds

If you have the headache problem “No 5.1 Surround Sound from Apple TV 4″, read this tutorial to solve it and learn how to set and play HD videos with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sounds in ATV 4.
Set Up ATV 4 for streaming HD videos with Dobly Digital 5.1 sounds
The 2015 new Apple TV offers the simplest way to stream all of the movies and TV shows available in the iTunes Store to your HDTV on a rental or purchase basis, with purchases stored in the cloud. While enjoying stunning HD image quality, many folks are having problem with audio, in specific, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. To achieve your goal smoothly, I have found a great tutorial for you, guaranteed to stream HD movie contents to Apple TV 4 with Dolby Digital AC3 sounds properly.

Requirements

Don’t get too excited on how to sync your Dobly Dgital 5.1 movies with ATV 4 just yet. Before anything else, you’re requried to make something ready in advance:

- Apple TV 4 for 1080p/720p Video Streaming;
- Windows or Mac computer with iTunes 10.6 or later;
- 720p/1080p HDTV;
- Home theater system (an A/V receiver capable of Dolby Digital playback plus surround sound speakers);
- An HDMI cable to connect Apple TV 4 to your HDTV;
- An optical digital audio cable to connect Apple TV 4 to audio receiver;
- Internet connection;
- Your Apple ID and password

Instructions

According to my experience, Apple TV 4 is not able to decode 5.1 surround sound to stereo by itself, if you want to play AC3 5.1 (Dolby Digital surround) audio you will need an AV receiver. Applet TV 4 (including 2nd-gen and 3nd-gen) does not decode the surround audio itself, it will pass through the audio to AV receiver for decoding. If you do not have the AV receiver and connect 2015 New Apple TV directly to your HD TV with HDMI, then there will be only video without sound while playing surround sound movie. But Apple TV 4 itself just works ok with movie of stereo sound.

Set up Apple TV for streaming HD videos with Dolby Digital 5.1 sounds

Unbox Apple TV 4 and follow the below steps to get started with Apple TV 4.

1. Connect Apple TV 4 to a power outlet.
2. Connect Apple TV 4 to HDTV with an HDMI cable.
3. Connect Apple TV 4 to audio receiver with an optical digital audio cable. Turn on audio receiver, and use Direct Mode for Dolby Digital 5.1 audio reproduction.
4. When Apple TV 4 boots up, it will scan for available WiFi networks to connect to. Use the remote control find yours and choose it, then enter your password. The Apple TV 4 can also connect via Ethernet. Apple explains how to connect the black Apple TV 4 models to network in the Apple TV 4 User’s Guide, specifically from pages 16.

Note: There is no HDMI cable or optical cable included in the Apple TV 4 box, so you’ll need to purchase an HDMI cable and an optical digital audio cable.

Setup for Apple TV 4 to play/stream movies from your computer

At this point, you should be ready to stream the hottest HD movies and TV shows from iTunes Store and Netflix with the black Apple TV 4.

If you’re more into streaming music or videos from computer to Apple TV 4, you can enable home sharing feature. Home Sharing allows you to stream content from your iTunes library to the Apple TV 4 to be displayed on your HDTV. To use home sharing, you need to have iTunes installed on your computer and set up on your main home computer and on Apple TV 4. Note that Apple TV 4 works with iTunes 10.2 later and Apple TV 4 iTunes 10.6 and later on versions.

Download iTunes latest version from Apple.

To set up Home Sharing in iTunes:

1. Open iTunes on your computer.

2. Choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing.

3. Enter your Apple ID and password that you use for the iTunes Store, and then click Create Home Share

To set up Home Sharing on Apple TV:

1. On Apple TV 4, choose Settings > Computers .

2. Choose Turn On Home Sharing, and then enter the same Apple ID and password you entered on your computer.

Once Home Sharing has been turned on, Apple TV 4 will automatically find iTunes libraries on your home network that have Home Sharing turned on using the account name you entered.

Setup for Apple TV 4 to pass-through Dolby Digital 5.1 to audio receiver

Now that your Apple TV 4 is connected to a Dolby Digital-capable sound system, you can let Apple TV pass through Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound audio to the receiver.

To set up Dolby Digital out on Apple TV 4:
1. On Apple TV 4, choose Settings > Audio & Video

2. Choose Dolby Digital, and change the settings to On

Play/Stream HD video from iTunes library to Apple TV 4 with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound

Now you can back to menu and play movies from computer. Choose Computer>Movies and stream up to 720p HD movies to Apple TV 2 and up to 1080p movies to Apple TV 3. Apple TV 4 will passes data out to your A/V receiver for decoding when/if the HD video contains Dolby Digital sound.

What if:

1. My Apple TV 2 will not deliver Dolby Digital 5.1 audio?

ATV 2 with firmware 4.2.2 many not handle DD 5.1 properly. Update your firmware to the latest version.

2. I set Dolby Digital to Auto…

When Dolby Digital is set to auto, the Apple TV will play AAC stereo when the source video contains both Dolby Digital 5.1 and AAC stereo audio.
3. I’d like to stream videos with DTS surround?

Neither Apple TV 2 nor Apple TV 3 would handle DTS audio. A workaround here is to convert DTS to ATV supported audio formats: HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

4. My MKV/AVI/WMV video won’t load in iTunes library?

You can’t stream MKV to Apple TV 4 unless they are encoded into Apple TV 4 supported formats (MP4, M4V, MOV). But luckily Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate has Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3 oriented presets that can keep Dolby Digital 5.1 as well as AAC stereo audio when converting MKV/AVI/WMV/VOB/TS/MPEG videos for Apple TV 4 streaming. Due to format compatibility issues, Apple TV 4 owners are always having troubles streaming Blu-ray, DVD movies and 1080p/720p videos to Apple TV for playing back. To make things much easier, you can read throughPavtube’s Apple TV 3 Column page (about how to enable Apple TV 4 to enjoy a world of 1080p HD contents with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound) and find out the most suitable solution to your problem.

Stream Videos from Mac to your Apple TV

Apple TV is a tiny digital media player which allows you to enjoy a whole world of movies, TV shows, sports, music, and more. It should be the NO.1 choice to sync videos from computer to big Screen HDTV for watching on your couch. This article will show you to two simple ways to stream Video from Mac to Apple TV in detail: iTunes or AirPlay Morning.

1. Using iTunes

If you’re wanting to watch any movies or TV shows that you have in your iTunes library, streaming them via AirPlay is incredibly easy to do.Step 1: Start Playing Your Video

Open iTunes and select the movie or TV show that you’d like to watch and then hit Play

iTunes provides native AirPlay support for any video files you may have within your library.Step 2: Set AirPlay Destination

Once the movie has started, select the AirPlay menu from the toolbar at the top and select your Apple TV. After a few moments, you should see the video appear on your TV and iTunes will display the device you’re currently connected to.

The AirPlay menu displays any AirPlay-enabled devices you will have on your network.

Alternatively, you can also select the AirPlay menu from the playback toolbar that displays when you hover your mouse over the video playback.

You can toggle AirPlay from the playback toolbar.Editor’s Note:

As you can see, playback of video from iTunes is incredibly easy. Whilst iTunes only supports a certain number of video formats, you may find it the best option if you’re happy to convert any incompatible video files first using an app before importing.

Of course, some free video converting tools such as Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip can do you a favor, however is you want to find a perfect one to do conversion, here we introduce this smart Mac Apple TV Video Converter- Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac

With it, you can not only convert any video like FLV, MKV, AVI, WMV, VOB, MOV, TiVo, MOD, etc to Apple TV compatible format- M4V, but also transcode any music files like WMV, OGG, AC3, AIFF, FLA, MKA, etc for playback on ATV effortlessly. Download it and follow the stepshere to do conversion. And after that, you can import the converted videos into your iTunes library for syncing.2. Using AirPlay Mirroring

Introduced in Mountain Lion and supported on Macs that were introduced in mid-2011 onwards, OS X is now able to mirror what we see on our Mac’s display to our Apple TV, including audio. If nothing else, we can use it to watch any type of video content we want via our Apple TV.

AirPlay Mirroring lets you mirror your Mac’s display on your TV.Step 1: Activate AirPlay Mirroring

AirPlay Mirroring can be turned on using either the menu bar icon or via the Displaypreferences in System Preferences

AirPlay Mirroring can be activated via the menu bar.

When activated, you can select if you want to match the Apple TV’s display resolution to what your Mac currently has or if you’d prefer to match your Mac’s display to your Apple TV.

AirPlay Mirroring can also be managed via System Preferences.

If you select the first option, your Apple TV won’t actually match the resolution, instead it will simply emulate it as your Mac is capable of much higher resolutions than most televisions.

Selecting the second option will reduce your Mac’s display to the same resolution as your Apple TV currently outputs, making everything seem bigger.Step 2: Play Your Video

Now that we’re mirroring our Mac’s display, anything you do on your Mac is also shown on your Apple TV, including video playback. Audio is also sent to your Apple TV so if you start watching a video, you’ll hear the audio through your TV and not your Mac, which may be in another room.

AirPlay Mirroring is the best all-round solution as any video your Mac can play will be seen directly on your Apple TV, too. The downside is that your Mac can’t be used so if you’re someone who likes to browse the web whilst watching a video, this may not be the ideal solution.

What’s more, streaming movies from Mac to PlayStation 3 and Chromecast are not so difficult.

How to fix top 5 Apple TV Common issues?

Television watchers are longing for a better TV experience, and Apple’s in a prime position to make that happen. The Apple TV, as one of the quieter products in Apple’s lineup, it’s still very popular amongst home theater users and streaming lovers. However, the device isn’t without its issues.

Here’s how to fix the five most common Apple TV problems. (Also learn how to troubleshoot common Issues for Chromecast and Roku

Top 1: How to Fix Apple TV WiFi Problems

WiFi problems with the Apple TV are perhaps the most common to occur with the set-top box, especially since WiFi problems in general are far too easy to come across in the first place.

With the Apple TV, it’s possible that you could experience difficulty finding a WiFi network, unable to join a nearby WiFi network, connected to a WiFi network, but unable to access content, or intermittent disconnects and general connectivity issues.

To fix any of these problems, first navigate to Settings > General > Network and select Test Network. If you’re connected to a WiFi network, but the test shows that it’s having trouble connecting, it could be that your router needs rebooted or the Apple TV itself needs rebooted. To restart your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > General > Restart.

If your Apple TV can connect to WiFi, but the signal isn’t very strong, it’s possible that it’s receiving a weak signal. Try moving the router closer to the Apple TV or vice versa, if you can. Most important, use Ethernet whenever you can, as that will give you the best connection there is without the potential problems that arise when going wireless. (Here is detaied solution)Top 2: How to Fix Apple TV AirPlay Problems

AirPlay is a really popular feature with the Apple TV, and it’s one reason that many users buy an Apple TV in the first place, but issues can easily arise when trying to use it.

If you’re having problems getting AirPlay to work between an iOS device and your Apple TV, make sure that both devices are connected to the same WiFi network, as this is what makes it work in the first place.

If you’re not seeing the AirPlay icon in the first place in an app, it’s very likely that the app doesn’t support AirPlay to begin with. You can also check to see if AirPlay is enabled on your Apple TV in the first place. Head to Settings > AirPlay and make sure that the feature is turned on.

If you’re having performance issues with AirPlay, like stuttering and lag, make sure that there’s no another device on your network hogging up bandwidth, as this can be a huge culprit. (Learn more)Top 3: How to Fix Apple TV Video Problems

Another common issue with the Apple TV is that trying to play streaming content doesn’t work and there’s no video or audio, or there could be audio but no video.

One of the simplest things to do is make sure the HDMI cable going from the Apple TV to your television is plugged in snuggly on both ends.

The Apple TV might also be set at the wrong resolution, which could cause the video to not display at all by default. To change the resolution while the content is playing, press and hold the Menu and Up button on your Apple Remote for about six seconds. The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution and will do so every 20 seconds or so. Press Play on the Apple Remote to keep the current resolution or Select to manually cycle to the next resolution.

Eventually, it will get to the correct resolution, and hopefully the video will come back and play normally.Top 4: How to Fix Apple TV Audio Problems

Perhaps a very common audio problems is when there is video, but no audio playing, and it’s really annoying when this happens. However, there are simple fixes for this.

First off, check and make sure that all connections between your Apple TV and your television are properly plugged in. If you use an audio receiver, make sure that it’s set to the right input (usually scrolling through the inputs while you play something will do the trick).

And while this usually isn’t the case, we have to mention it, simply because it happens: Make sure your volume is turned up and not set to Mute.Top 5: How to Fix Apple TV Remote Problems

You can operate an Apple TV set-top box without the accompanying remote. If you’re having issues with the remote, that’s clearly a bad sign. Here’s how to fix that.

If the Apple TV doesn’t respond to commands from your remote, it’s possible that the remote isn’t paired with the Apple TV. Use the remote to clear the current pairing by holding Menu and Left for six seconds (a broken chain-link icon will appear on your TV screen). Now pair your remote back by holding Menu and Right for six seconds (a chain-link icon will appear on your TV screen).

If that still doesn’t work, try replacing the small battery on the inside of the remote. It’s a traditional CR3032 battery that you can find pretty much anywhere in the battery section of your favorite store.

What’s more, do you have any video streaming issues?

Well, is there a solution? Fortunately yes, there are number of third party software that will easily convert your all your videos to Apple TV format for watching hrough Apple TV on your HDTV. Here we highly recommend you the best Video Converter for Apple TV- Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate

With it, you can easily batch convert any video files AVI, MKV, MPEG, Xvid, DivX, WMV, FLV, MOD, TOD, F4V, MTS, M2TS in 1080i/1080p resolution to Apple TV supported video formatkeeping 1080p quality for playing full HD video on Apple TV freely.
